Halal Rabbit

Yes. Rabbit is permitted under the mainstream schools of Islamic law, so rabbit meat is halal when the animal is slaughtered according to Islamic rules. Our whole rabbit is Certified Halal and sold with our other halal poultry and game, and the certificates covering our meat are on the halal certification page.

As a whole rabbit of about 1.4kg (1.3-1.6kg), with the cut chosen on the product page: whole, halved, quartered, 8 or 12 pieces, curry diced into 16-18 pieces, or diced small. One rabbit serves three to four people in a curry. It is the only rabbit product we list; there is no boneless rabbit or portion pack, so order a second whole rabbit for a bigger pot.

Slowly, with liquid. Rabbit has very little fat, so it dries out when roasted hard, but it is excellent in a curry, a stew or a tomato braise: brown the jointed rabbit, add the sauce and simmer gently for about an hour until the meat comes away from the bone. The loin pieces cook faster than the legs, so add them later or take them out first. The flavour is mild and close to chicken, so any chicken curry recipe works.

The rabbit is cut to order on the day of dispatch and travels in a Woolcool insulated box with ice gel packs that hold 0-4C for up to 72 hours, by DPD Tuesday to Saturday: dispatched the next working day and delivered the day after. Delivery is 6.99 under 60 pounds and free from 60 pounds, with a 15 pound minimum order. Keep it in the fridge and cook it within a couple of days, or freeze it on the day it arrives.
