The fruit bowl basics, added to the meat order so there is no second shop. Bananas come as a pack of 6, English apples and oranges as packs of 4, and lemons and limes as packs of 3 for marinades, chutneys and the squeeze over a grilled chop. Green plantain fries into savoury chips and yellow plantain into sweet ones; a whole coconut with husk is for chutney and curry; and green raw mangoes are the sour kind for achar, aam panna and dal. Ripe mangoes are seasonal and appear only while the season lasts. This page sits under fresh produce and travels chilled with your meat.

Fruits Buying Guide & Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our certified Halal butcher cuts, chilled packaging, and delivery.

Which fruit do you sell?

Nine lines at the moment: bananas, English apples, oranges, lemons, limes, green plantain, yellow plantain, green raw mangoes and a whole coconut. It is a small shelf meant to top up a meat order rather than replace the greengrocer, and the vegetables page is the bigger one. For a mixed box, see the vegetable and fruit boxes.

What is the difference between green and yellow plantain?

Ripeness. Green plantain is starchy and savoury, sliced and fried into tostones or chips, boiled with a West African stew, or grated into fritters; it goes with a goat curry or mutton the way potatoes would. Yellow plantain has ripened and turned sweet, and fries into soft golden slices, the Ghanaian kelewele with ginger and chilli, or a side for jollof with chicken. Both come in packs of 3; a green one left on the counter turns yellow in a week.

What are green raw mangoes used for?

The sour, unripe mango that goes into cooking rather than the fruit bowl. Green raw mangoes, 250g, are grated into a fresh chutney with coriander and mint, cooked into a khatti dal with TRS masoor, blended for aam panna in summer, or cut into pieces for a homemade achar with Dabur mustard oil. For the sweet kind out of season, kesar mango pulp is on the tinned desserts page.

Do you sell ripe mangoes?

Only in season. Pakistani and Indian mangoes arrive for a few weeks each summer and are listed while they last; outside that window the fresh mango page is empty rather than filled with lesser fruit. The year-round options are the green raw mangoes for cooking and KTC kesar mango pulp or TRS alphonso pulp for lassi, kulfi and desserts. If you want to be told when the season starts, contact us.

How does fruit travel with a meat order?

In the same Woolcool insulated box as the meat, kept at 0-4C by the ice gel packs, by DPD, Tuesday to Saturday: dispatched the next working day and delivered the day after. Bananas and plantain are best taken out of the cold on arrival so they ripen normally; citrus and apples keep in the fridge or a cool bowl. Delivery is 6.99 under 60 pounds and free from 60 pounds, with a 15 pound minimum order. The rest of the fresh range is under fresh produce.
